About Us

What is an ISD?

An Intermediate School District is a government agency that assists local school districts in providing education programs and services to the county or counties it serves. When ISDs were established in 1962 the name “intermediate” school district was chosen to reflect the role as a link between local school districts and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). Michigan’s public education system is composed of 56 intermediate school districts and every local school district and public school academy in the state is part of an ISD.

Traverse Bay Area ISD

Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District (TBAISD) serves 16 public school districts, five public school academies, and fourteen private and parochial schools within Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. Together, the ISD and its local school districts determine the services needed to improve student learning, serve children’s special needs, develop teachers’ expertise and work collaboratively to maximize services and resources on a regional scale.
